GENERAL DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE

Robert and Amy have chosen marriage as the ultimate celebration of their virtues. Marriage is a position in life that must be earned. It is a legal contract, a social tradition, and, most important, a profoundly personal commitment over the span of a lifetime.

.

The first challenge to the possibility of marriage is finding one's soul-mate - the second is knowing if your fundamental standards are in agreement. Robert and Amy have found, through their mutual virtues, that they are soul-mates. They have shown each other that they are rational, honest, and resolved to live the happiest lives they can live.

.

Years ago, early in their relationship, Amy wrote to Robert,

“The day I stop loving you is the day you abandon your judgment.”

.

Robert replied,

"I have caught myself thinking at times, most times, of our love in years, in terms of a lifetime. And have accepted that while I may be right, it is a bit premature to assume such things. But I can say that … I will never abandon my mind's discernment. As long as you are you, I will never stop loving you. … But don't take my work for it. Let me prove it to you."

.

For five years they continued to prove it, and, Robert finally accepted his own verdict by asking Amy's hand in marriage last year.

This ceremony is their proof to each other and to all who listen that they will never abandon their mind's discernment.
